About
Abu Bakkar Siddique (42), a farmer of Chandipasha village in Pakundia Upazila, Kishoreganj, has grown Black Queen watermelon out of season. On the advice of the upazila agriculture office's sub-assistant officer he planted it on trellises on 40 decimals, at a cost of about Tk 40,000. In just 70 days he sold more than Tk 1 lakh worth, and by the season's end he expects Tk 2.5-3 lakh in sales and up to Tk 1.5 lakh profit. The dark-skinned melons are deep red and sweet inside, and wholesalers from around the district come to buy straight from the field. Paddy and vegetables used to earn him little; young men nearby have started growing Black Queen after seeing his results. He wants agriculture department support to farm on a larger scale.
