Al Amin, 25, of Baroil village in Rawna union, Gafargaon upazila, Mymensingh, earns his living by rearing and training horses. When he was eight his father Nizam Uddin bought a horse and later went into the horse trade. The family now has four local horses and one crossbred, one of them a foal. Foals are trained for three to four months in trotting and galloping and then sold; besides their own foals, they buy foals from the market to train. Each year he enters 20 to 30 horse races in nearby districts and upazilas, and the winnings cover household and horse costs. Feeding one horse costs about Tk 4,000 a month.
