Farmer Alamgir Hossain Alam of Fulbaria village in Magura union, Jhikargacha upazila, Jashore, grew beans out of season on 12 decimals. In mid-May he sowed a variety known locally as Rahim; seedlings, irrigation, fertiliser, weeding, pesticide and trellis cost Tk 8,000 over 75 days. Picking began at 60 days, yielding 2 maunds a week. Being off-season the price is high: he earlier sold at Tk 130 a kg, and at the time of the report wholesale was Tk 70. He expects at least Tk 150,000 profit after costs. The upazila agriculture officer says he has always done well with vegetables.
