Sugarcane farmer Alauddin Patwari of Balithuba West union, Faridgonj upazila, Chandpur, grows a tall, thin-jointed red cane, which many call the 'rong bilash' variety, on one and a half acres. In the 2022 season he spent about Tk 2.3 lakh and, with good prices, expected sales of over Tk 3.3 lakh. In Faridgonj cane is ready in 7–8 months, and onion, garlic, mustard, pumpkin and potato can be grown alongside as companion crops. Cane from the upazila meets local demand and goes to Dhaka and other districts.
