About
Renuka Rani Mistri, 63, of remote Purba Amragachhia village in Sarankhola upazila, Bagerhat, worked for years as a village midwife but earned little, and salinity and harsh weather meant the family's farming made no profit. At the 'Adaptation Clinic' of BRAC's 'Aparajeyo Desh' project, funded by BRAC Bank, she learned climate-resilient vegetable growing, seasonal planning, soil management and organic pest control. She now grows about 50 varieties of vegetables on her homestead land, including pumpkin, bottle gourd, broccoli, squash, beetroot, radish, kohlrabi, cauliflower and cabbages of several colours; seeds and fertiliser come from the project, and weekly weather calls and SMS advice help her. She plants according to local market demand to get good prices and earns about Tk 50,000 a season. She encourages other women in the area and shares her experience with them.
