About
Barek Mia grows vegetables on floating beds in Gagon village, Baldia union, the wetland area of Nesarabad upazila, Pirojpur. He builds each bed by laying bamboo over a thick mat of water hyacinth and treading layers down until it is solid; a new bed takes 15-20 days to become plantable. He then sows seed directly or plants seedlings raised in balls of mulch; ginger, turmeric and taro can be planted directly. Floating beds here carry okra, tomato, aubergine and water spinach, intercropped with ridge gourd, red amaranth, Malabar spinach, coriander and stem amaranth. Local traders buy the produce and take it by boat and trawler to Miarhat, Swarupkathi and other markets.
