About
Biplob Shikder of Pajrabhanga in Taltali upazila, Barguna, is known locally as 'Begun Biplob' (Brinjal Biplob) for his brinjal farming. After his family lost most of its land to a court case, he tried a vegetable business in Taltali town and later wholesale trading of vegetables brought from Khulna, Jashore and Kushtia, but could not keep it going. In 2011 he collected seedlings from the Rakhine community and started growing the special 'Rakhine brinjal' on 20 katha of land at home, making a profit of about Tk 30,000 in the first year. He now grows it on 2 acres of inherited land and makes a profit of Tk 4–5 lakh each season. From early Agrahayan to 15 Falgun the field yields about 100 kg a day, which he sells in the local market at Tk 900–1,000 per maund. His wife Sangita Rani works alongside him in tending, picking and selling. The variety is now known as BARI Begun-12, with single fruits weighing up to 1.5 kg, and his success has encouraged neighbouring farmers to grow it too.
