About
Shahin Hossain, a young man from Bhandarpur village in Badalgachi upazila, Naogaon, chose not to chase a job after his studies and began making doormats with 12 machines, naming his workshop 'BRB Carpet House'. Working on limited capital with waste fabric (jhut) collected from garment factories, he saw demand for his handmade doormats grow, so he raised output and trained poor women of the village to join the work. The workshop now has 120 machines, and at least 70 women work from home under his supervision, earning Tk 6,000–8,000 a month. The main raw materials, jhut fabric (Tk 30 a kg), wool yarn (Tk 80 a kg) and warp yarn (Tk 150 a kg), come from Adamdighi in Bogura. Some 2,000 doormats are made every day and go to various districts; each week businesses come to the workshop to buy them. In the three months before the report, jhut and yarn rose by Tk 5–10 a kg, trimming profits. The district BSCIC office said it would help with loans and exports if he applies.
