About
Four friends from Chakkauria village, Sreebordi, Sherpur — Muktadir Ahmed Nayan, Swapan Ahsan, Nishat Hasan and Shanto Mia — chose to start something of their own rather than chase jobs, and brought black rice seed from China at Tk 3,000 a kg. They leased three acres and, for about Tk 1 lakh, grew Sherpur's first black rice; with Golam Rasul of Hashdhara village's two acres, about five acres were planted in all. They estimate about Tk 10 lakh from the three acres, counting seed, paddy sales and home use. They say they will sell seed to interested farmers at Tk 1,000 a kg, and the agriculture department wants to spread their seed across the district.
