Abdur Rashid, a farmer in Gondamara union, Banshkhali, Chattogram, now grows early tomatoes on five kani (one kani = 40 decimals) where he used to grow paddy. He says rice brought little profit, while a good tomato crop has earned him at least Tk 4 lakh. In 2025 farmers in Gondamara and Saral unions planted tomatoes in August instead of October and dug drains across their fields to clear rainwater; high-yield varieties such as Profit Early, Durjoy and Bahubali are grown in the area. He believes tomato farming will keep growing in this saline coastal area.
