Dayal Bhandar is a vegetable wholesale stall (arot) in the Notun Bazar area of Birampur municipality, Dinajpur, owned by trader Ashraful Islam (55), who lives in the municipality's Mahmudpur neighbourhood. Neighbours describe him as a successful local businessman who is busy with trade all day. Eight years ago he fed a pigeon that landed on the shop's veranda; now more than two hundred pigeons arrive on the stall's tin roof at 12:30 every afternoon, and he or a shop employee scatters 1.5-2 kg of wheat for them. He also gives bread to crows and cake to four cats, spending over Tk 3,000 a month. Shopkeepers and customers gather to watch.
