Jewel Akand's 'Ek Takar Hotel' (One-Taka Hotel) is in Faridpur village of Pabnapur union, Palashbari upazila of Gaibandha, about 22 km from the district town. While dates, piyaju, beguni and potato chops cost Tk 5 each at local markets, during Ramadan this hotel sells them for one taka each as a special discount; bhuna khichuri is Tk 15 a plate and chicken biryani Tk 25, far below nearby shops. Jewel Akand says he cut prices with the village's poor in mind; he and his wife Lipi Ahmed cook the food and he sells it himself. There are chairs, tables and a sofa for eating inside, and chairs under umbrellas in front. Villagers, including day labourers and rickshaw pullers, buy their iftar here.
