Wadud Matubbar's (55) lychee orchard on 104 decimals in Jahapur village, Jahapur union, Madhukhali upazila, Faridpur; he has grown lychees for at least 30 years. Jahapur lychees are juicy and tasty and, because of the local climate, ripen earlier than elsewhere in the country, so they are in demand at the start of the season; through wholesalers they go to Dhaka, Barishal, Madaripur, Shariatpur and nearby districts. At harvest his wife Asma Begum, their children, neighbours and even his son-in-law sit in the orchard tying lychees into bunches. From flowering to harvest, pesticides, insecticides and fungicides cost at least Tk 50,000 on this land. In 2025 drought cut the crop by a third compared with other years, and the fruit was smaller and less sweet.
