About
Farmer Jahidul Islam's pineapple orchard, five bigha in two separate plots, in Lohadi village, Barishab union, Kapasia upazila, Gazipur. Nothing used to grow on this high, hillock-like land; on the advice of neighbouring farmers and the local agriculture office he planted the Jaldhup pineapple variety. In 2022 the orchard was five years old; that year he sold Tk 1 lakh of pineapples from the two plots, and pineapple suckers (saplings) are sold from the orchard regularly. Farmers say Kapasia's Jaldhup ripens well ahead of other pineapples, fetching good prices, and is sweeter.
