About
A mango orchard on two acres of fallow hillock land of the Lalmai hills in Barpara village (Boro Dharmapur mouza), Barpara union, Cumilla Sadar South upazila. The owner, A R M Harisur Rahman, retired in 2015 as Director (Finance) of the Rural Electrification Board. At the agriculture department's suggestion he planted BARI-4 saplings received free in May 2016, spending about Tk 3 lakh. The trees flowered in 2017; the first crop in 2018 gave 50 maunds, and from the next year the orchard has yielded 100 maunds a year; this year 250 trees were expected to pass 100 maunds. Started as a hobby, it is now commercial. Three workers tend it following the agriculture department's guidance and one guards it at night. The mango can be eaten both green and ripe, and people of all ages come to see the orchard.
