About
Ilias Molla, a farmer with a disability from Palashbaria village in Mohammadpur upazila of Magura, has overcome poverty by growing pesticide-free vegetables, mainly bottle gourd. He lost his mother as a small child and worked as a domestic help from the age of seven, with no chance to study; later he returned to his ancestral home and began sharecropping. He first leased 45 decimals of abandoned land in the village to grow bottle gourd and within a year had paid back the lease and production costs. In the 2023 season he leased one acre for bottle gourd, and also grows paddy. After selling Tk 30,000 worth of gourds in the first round he sold about Tk 90,000 more, over Tk 1 lakh in all. He sends the gourds from the field to the haat, and gourds from his land are also going abroad. The upazila agriculture officer says he grows safe vegetables using modern methods and that many in the area have taken up vegetable farming after seeing him. He also keeps goats, ducks and chickens at home.
