Jahangir Alam, a farmer in the Dharmapur area of Sitakunda upazila, Chattogram, has grown summer Rupban beans on the hills for about ten years. As last year, he planted 200 decimals this season and has already sold more than Tk 8 lakh of beans. He says hill farming needs no rent or irrigation, and Rupban beans earn at least four times as much as winter beans. Wholesale buyers from Dhaka, Chattogram and elsewhere come to buy them. Planting starts in May–June and picking runs from July–August to December; early in the season beans fetched up to Tk 250 a kg wholesale, later Tk 120–150.
