About
In ward 5 of Medua union, Doulatkhan upazila, Bhola, cousins Jahid Hossain (27) and Md. Jihad (25) leased a 24-decimal pond and around December 2022 began culturing pearls in mussels alongside fish. Inspired by YouTube videos, they implanted 2,000 nuclei or 'image' pearls into 1,000 live mussels and hung them in 35 cages at a set depth, at a cost of about Tk 65,000. They expect two pearls per mussel, at a wholesale price of Tk 200-250 each, and hoped for about Tk 2.5 lakh profit. They say pearls can be made in different designs and colours. The same pond holds Tk 15,000 worth of carp, which they hoped to sell for about Tk 70,000. The district fisheries officer said this was the first pearl culture in Bhola; on their advice a young man at Ratanpur Bazar in Sadar upazila has also started. People come from many places to see the pond.
