About
Farmer Jahid Hossain of Jammura village on the Lalmai hills, Cumilla Sadar South upazila, comes from a family that has grown cassava (locally 'kath alu' or 'thenga alu') for generations; he himself has grown it for 14 years. This year he planted cassava on 52 acres. Each acre costs about Tk 25,000, and with a good harvest an acre's crop sells for Tk 30,000. Buyers are few: one or two companies collect the crop, which is loaded onto trucks. Cassava is a raw material for bakery goods, glucose, barley, chips and the pharmaceutical industry.
