About
Jahidul Islam, a farmer from Burasarduby in Fakirpara union, Hatibandha upazila of Lalmonirhat, saw a TV report on chia seed and, on the upazila agriculture office's advice, grew chia on 35 decimals in 2022; it earned more than his other crops. In 2023 he was growing chia on about 1 acre 50 decimals, along with ginger, onion and maize. He won the best farmer award for Rangpur division for 2021-22. Because tobacco ruins soil fertility, he encourages local farmers to give it up for chia and teaches them how to grow it; several neighbours have grown chia for the first time on his advice. By the agriculture office's figures, a bigha costs Tk 7,000-8,000 to grow and yields 100-120 kg, and chia seed sells at Tk 800-900 per kg on the market.
