About
Jalal Uddin of Bandbatpar on the border in Jhenaigati, Sherpur, worked in Malaysia for 10 years in a factory that made chocolate, coffee, cake, biscuits and ice cream from cocoa beans. When he returned in 1998 he brought cocoa seeds, and his garden grew from them; the trees now fruit, each bearing more than a hundred pods with about 30 beans each. His garden now holds about a thousand seedlings. He harvests two or three times a year; the beans are dried and ground to make chocolate. The upazila agriculture office advises him regularly on cocoa growing and seedling production, and notes that ginger and turmeric do well as companion crops.
