About
Nazrul Islam of Khanpur village, Narikelbaria union, Bagherpara upazila, Jashore, has farmed 58 decimals of mortgaged and leased land for three years. On 23 decimals he uses trellises to grow four main crops and two companion crops on the same land each year; after the watermelon harvest the field now holds yam (mete alu), beans and Malabar spinach, with turmeric and chilli as companion crops. The rest has okra on 23 decimals and bottle gourd on 12. Following the local method, mulching film is laid on six-cubit-wide beds and trellises are built from bamboo strips and nylon netting; the first build costs about Tk 50,000 a bigha and lasts five to six years. Nazrul says he makes a profit of over Tk 1 lakh a year after all costs.
