About
Jewel Mia and his wife Mahmuda Akter, of North-West union in Baniachong upazila, Habiganj, brought their family out of hardship with a poultry farm. They first kept chickens as a hobby, then started the business with a small amount of money, and with the poultry income they have also set up a cattle farm. At the time of the report the farm had 1,500 birds. Mahmuda looks after the farm alongside the housework. Jewel said profits had shrunk as chick prices rose from Tk 15–20 to Tk 35–45 each and feed prices climbed; chicken was then selling at Tk 140–145 a kg. A virus had killed many birds and they were running at a loss. The upazila youth development officer said the couple could expand the farm with training and a government loan.
