About
Jharna Biswas, a woman with a hearing disability, runs a tiny wooden shop at Maliat crossing on the Narail–Tularampur–Shekhhati regional road in Maliat village, Shekhhati union, Narail Sadar upazila. About 30 years ago, soon after marrying day-labourer Harichand Biswas, she began selling eggs, singara and paratha in front of their home to ease the family's hardship. Now 50, she has run the shop for more than half her life, selling fried eggs, singara and jhalmuri. The shop is only 3 to 4 feet across; she sits inside frying eggs in a wok, keeps the singara in a glass case beside her, and customers buy standing in front. Her husband helps at the shop between field work. With rising prices and a larger household the income is small, but she keeps the shop going to make a living.
