About
Jorina Akter, a woman farmer of Bekhoirhati village in Dalpa union, Kendua upazila, Netrokona, produces vermicompost commercially. In January 2017 she and two other farmers began making vermicompost on their own initiative; now more than a hundred farmers in six villages of the Bekhoirhati block make it, at least 30–40 of them commercially. Jorina Akter says she sells 20–30 maunds of vermicompost a month at Tk 400–600 per maund; demand is high and costs are low, so she profits by producing it at home. Traders from neighbouring Ishwarganj upazila also buy vermicompost regularly from Bekhoirhati.
