About
Md. Kamal Uddin (68) of Hathazari, Chattogram, has collected carp eggs from the Halda river for 55 years, working professionally since the age of 13 or 14. He began with two boats, reaching ten in 1991, when he gathered 60 kg of spawn, his lifetime best. Since 2000 he has hatched spawn in a hatchery and now ships it in oxygenated polythene bags to districts across the country; his spawn has also gone to India and Myanmar. This season he caught 35 buckets of eggs with 14 boats and sold 8 kg of spawn for Tk 8 lakh, helped by his three sons. Outside the season he runs a nursery, a timber business and a poultry farm. He won a silver medal during National Fisheries Week, sits on the Halda protection committee and chairs the Halda River fisheries cooperative.
