In Balrampur village of Cumilla Sadar South upazila, farmer Kazi Anwar Hossain grows yellow watermelons and the black Black Sweet-2 variety on 60 decimals of land on his own initiative. He covers raised beds with mulching sheet, builds trellises and hangs the fruit in net bags, which saves fertiliser and reduces pests. Earlier he grew Black Baby watermelons, which local people bought straight from the field. According to the agriculture department's deputy director, this is the first yellow watermelon cultivation in Cumilla. Spending about Tk 1.3 lakh on the 60 decimals, he hoped to sell more than Tk 10 lakh worth of watermelons.
