About
Kazim Uddin Talukdar, a farmer of Chariya village in Durgapur union, Durgapur upazila, Netrokona, grew bitter gourd organically without pesticide on 50 decimals on the advice of the local agriculture officer. For the first time he built a new pattern of trellis and planted several thousand Bijoy-variety plants in rows, spending about Tk 40,000 in all. His wife and the family's children help pick the crop. He does not need to go to market: wholesale buyers come to the field and pay Tk 2,000 a maund. By the time of the report he had sold two consignments, expected 8-10 more, and hoped for a profit of about Tk 2 lakh after costs. The upazila agriculture officer said he had been given a one-bigha bitter gourd demonstration under the FRIP project but planted more land than that; neighbouring farmers are now keen to follow his method.
