Khorshed Alam's Yellow Watermelon Field

Khorshed Alam, a young entrepreneur from Domabari village in Goalbari union of Juri, became interested in yellow-fleshed watermelon from YouTube videos and began a small trial in 2022. He is considered the first in Juri to grow it and has grown it every year since. Last November, with support from the Department of Agricultural Extension's Sylhet Region Agricultural Development Project, he planted the 'Lanfai' variety on 33 decimals of land that used to lie fallow after the paddy harvest. He has spent nearly Tk 3 lakh and expects sales of Tk 5–6 lakh. With a good yield, he plans to expand to around three bighas next season. Visitors from across Sylhet and beyond come to see the field and taste the fruit, and several farmers want to grow it themselves.
