About
Mongolbaria village in Pakundia upazila, Kishoreganj, is famous as the litchi village; locals say litchi growing began here with two saplings brought from China around 1802. Mizanur Rahman of the village has 26 litchi trees, 10 of them large. For the 2025 season he expected more than 50,000 litchis from these trees and said he would start selling within days, hoping to get Tk 600-700 per 100 litchis. During the season he stays under the trees to guard them and chase off birds. Mongolbaria litchis are known for their sweet scent, small seed, plenty of flesh, large size and pink colour; they cost a little more than litchis from elsewhere but are in greater demand. The agriculture department says the village's sandy and loamy soil suits litchi.
