About
Lakkhi Beej Bhandar is a store of local seeds that Lakkhi Rani Mondal has built up in her own home in Jhorbhanga village, Botiaghata upazila, Khulna; it holds about 470 varieties. Since 2010 the local development organisation Lokoj has organised women's seed saving in Botiaghata, and in that tradition Lakkhi Rani goes every year to the annual seed fair at the Botiaghata upazila headquarters to collect new varieties and share her own collection with others. In her words, seed used to mean something bought at the haat, and now many of the village's lost local varieties are back in people's fields. Women's collections in the area include bottle gourd, ash gourd, snake gourd, okra, ridge gourd, sesame, mustard, Malabar spinach and pumpkin, as well as local rice varieties such as Morichshail, Rani Salut, Hijli, Digha, Morogshail and Kalamanik, and the women earn some income by selling surplus seed and vegetables.
