Lakshmi Haldar of Shakhagachhi village in Jhalokathi Sadar upazila started growing early winter vegetables with her husband five years before 2023. She had once been worried about high-interest loans taken from NGOs and moneylenders; by growing vegetables the right way she began to make a profit and has repaid most of the debt. In the 2023 season she earned about Tk 5 lakh from selling bottle gourds and early winter vegetables. In the 36 villages of Jhalokathi Sadar around her, women play the main role in vegetable growing, and the produce goes beyond the district to Dhaka and Barishal.
