Lovely Begum's Quinoa Field

Lovely Begum lives in Moddherchar, ward 9 of Mohanganj union in Rowmari upazila of Kurigram; in the last 10 years floods and river erosion have destroyed her home 8 times. In 2023 she received hands-on training in quinoa farming for climate-resilient livelihoods from the Local Government Initiative on Climate Change (LoGIC) project. The same year she leased 60 decimals of char land in Mohanganj, grew about 12 maunds of quinoa and sold it at Tk 140 per kg for Tk 67,200, against a cost of only Tk 15,000. By her reckoning maize on the same land would have cost Tk 30,000 and earned Tk 15,000-20,000, while quinoa earned her more than Tk 50,000. With the quinoa money she pays for her son's madrasa studies and has bought a cow; outside the season she raises livestock. Villagers mocked her at first, but now many come to her for advice on growing quinoa, and she gladly teaches them.
