About
Mahmuda Akter Mukta (35) used to live in Dhaka with her husband. About two years before this report she moved back to her family home in South Dighaldi, Bhola, bought two deshi hens to eat, and instead kept them; when they began laying she turned to poultry. The farm, started after watching YouTube, now has about 1,500 deshi chickens of all sizes and earns more than Tk 30,000 a month. It runs in three sheds at her home; the largest holds an incubator, feed-making equipment and about 400 laying hens and roosters, giving around 70 eggs a day. She sets 400 eggs at a time in the incubator. Day-old chicks sell for Tk 50-60 each and birds of 1-1.5 kg for Tk 450-500 a kg. The NGO Grameen Jano Unnayan Sangstha (GJUS) and the Department of Livestock gave her a day's training. To expand she has leased a few acres, where she plans to grow rice, vegetables and fodder grass as well.
