About
Md. Khalilur Rahman (55) of Chhoto Dalima village, Nazirpur union, Bauphal upazila, Patuakhali, left a private-firm job in Dhaka and came home to farm in 2000. Between 2000 and 2018 he completed IPM, ICM and IFMC farmer courses. Vegetables are now his main living: on paddy land in the beel he has two plots of trellised bottle gourd, sweet pumpkin and sponge gourd, with Latiraj taro grown underneath, and sells the taro and its stolons at market. With the agriculture office's help he uses mulching to grow high-value off-season vegetables and raised beds for gourds and pumpkin. Vegetables earn him Tk 50,000 a month. His homestead is a nutrition garden of mango, jamun, jackfruit, lychee, guava, sugarcane, pomelo, amra, olive and more; he makes his own manure from cattle and buffalo dung, presses sunflower oil for the family and keeps ducks and chickens. Neighbours are learning vegetable growing, fodder grass and cattle fattening from him, and the upazila agriculture officer calls him a successful agri-entrepreneur.
