Md. Mohiuddin (30), a young farmer from Patarpol village, Boga union, Bauphal upazila, Patuakhali, was cheated over a promised government job and then worked at a buying house in Dhaka before, on the advice of his wife Mosammat Fatema, the couple returned home to farm together. On two plots he grows about 1,200 improved bitter gourd plants and supplies bitter gourd across the upazila. He sells Tk 12,000-15,000 worth a week, more than Tk 50,000 a month. He sells to wholesalers at Tk 50 a kg when demand is low and Tk 70 when it is high. Alongside bitter gourd he grows bottle gourd, snake gourd, tomato, red amaranth and other seasonal vegetables, and sold Tk 70,000 of red amaranth in one year. The upazila agriculture office trained him and supported a 50-decimal project with seed, mulch, fertiliser and money. He plans a bigger farm on his own land and pond.
