Md. Sumon, a young farmer from Char Jabbar in Subarnachar, Noakhali, grows watermelon on Kazir Taluk char in Saherkhali union, Mirsharai upazila, Chattogram. Leasing land from locals at Tk 12,000–14,000 an acre, he and 59 other farmers have planted about 300 acres; Subarnachar farmers have come to this char for three years. Sumon spent Tk 17 lakh to grow watermelon on 16 acres; 26 labourers work his field daily, and five truckloads had been sold by then. The melons are loaded onto trucks right in the field and go to cities across the country.
