About
Mitali Haldar, an entrepreneur in Nazirpur, Pirojpur, brought two mulberry trees of one variety from Thailand to grow on trial, and both bore heavily. They flower in February-March and the fruit ripens in March-April, turning from green to red and finally black, with a sweet-sour taste. Each tree yields 8-10 kg of fruit and saplings can be raised from them; they also grow easily on a rooftop. Mitali says the trees get few diseases and need little pesticide, and with only organic fertiliser they fruit almost all year. Many farmers in the upazila are planning to grow mulberry commercially after seeing her effort.
