Moin-ul-Alam Bulbul's Katimon mango orchard

About

Moin-ul-Alam, known as Bulbul, a social worker from Amjhupi village in Meherpur Sadar upazila, was inspired by YouTube to plant 240 saplings of the year-round Thai 'Katimon' mango on two bighas beside the Amjhupi BADC seed farm in early 2021, bringing the saplings from Darshana in Chuadanga. On the year-and-a-half-old trees, ripe fruit, young fruit and blossom appear at the same time, and new blossom comes as soon as the mangoes are picked, giving three crops a year. The fruit has a small stone, no fibre, and tastes much like Himsagar. In August 2022 he sold about Tk 50,000 worth at Tk 200 a kg wholesale and expected to sell another 20-25 maunds. He also sells grafted saplings from the orchard; Rafiqul Alam of the same village has contracted to take grafts from him. People from villages across the district come every day to see the orchard.
