About
Monotosh Mondal (60), of Hatchala village in Bhurulia union, Shyamnagar upazila, Satkhira, grows cauliflower, cabbage, bitter gourd, tomato, aubergine, green chilli and other vegetables on two and a half bighas. He used to hawk conch-shell bangles from village to village; about 30 years ago he began growing vegetables on one and a half bighas in his homestead. After training from the agriculture department and other organisations he has farmed with modern methods since 2014, getting a range of vegetables from the same land all year. He earns Tk 6–7 lakh a year after costs. His vegetables go to the local market and to Khulna, Jashore and Barishal, and he says growers here farm without pesticides or chemicals. Seeing his success, and with his help, many people in Hatchala, Deol and Shankarkati villages took up vegetable farming; the local union parishad chairman credits him with the area's vegetable boom.
