About
Md. Mostafa Molla (40) of Chupair village in Jamalpur union, Kaliganj upazila, Gazipur, is a farmer who, according to the upazila agriculture officer, has grown green fodder grass for a long time. Alongside it he began a trial of mulberry, bringing 25 saplings of three varieties from Thailand, India and Pakistan by courier at Tk 300 each, and got heavy fruiting on every tree in the first season. Each tree gives 8–10 kg of fruit; with organic fertiliser alone it fruits almost all year, with little disease and hardly any need for pesticide. Though he paid a high price for his own saplings, he now sells mulberry saplings at Tk 30 each. Encouraged by the yield, he plans to grow mulberry commercially.
