Md. Motiar Rahman of Mathbariapara in Gadkhali village, Jhikargacha upazila, Jashore, is known locally as a skilled farmer. On 6 July he planted Durbar-variety bitter gourd seedlings on 27 decimals; the land already had mulching from earlier chemical-free vegetable growing, so planting, trellis and care cost only Tk 25,000 in all. Picking began when the plants were 36 days old; every four to five days 5-7 maunds are picked, selling wholesale at Tk 55-60 a kg. In the first two weeks he sold Tk 9,000 worth and expects at least Tk 250,000 in sales and Tk 200,000 profit over four months. Agriculture officials think his yield may beat the main season's.
