About
More than a hundred hair processing factories have grown up around Ranirbandar in Chirirbandar upazila of Dinajpur; Motiar Rahman owns one of them. He was once jobless and lived by hawking in villages; he collected hair and sold it to Biharis in Saidpur, learned the whole trade from them and started his own hair business. Fifty workers work in his factory. In these factories women workers untangle, sort and clean the hair, which is then washed with detergent and shampoo, cut on machines into small bunches ('lachi'), washed again with shampoo and conditioner, dried, and measured and graded into remy hair. Depending on length, processed hair sells from Tk 1,200 per kg for 6-inch hair up to Tk 60,000 per kg for 22-32-inch hair. Motiar Rahman says hair is in short supply, and small traders would benefit if they were allowed to import it.
