About
Murad Halder, a young man from Mouvog village in Naldha-Mouvog union of Fakirhat upazila, Bagerhat, sharecrops other people's land and, on the agriculture department's advice, grows four varieties of organic brinjal on 55 katha in three plots: Chakra BN 422, Nabakiran, VNR 212 and Greenball. The fields are netted on the sides and top; he uses cue-lure traps, Trichoderma, yellow sticky cards and organic manure, and mulching paper has cut irrigation costs roughly in half; he uses no pesticide or chemical fertiliser. Total production cost was Tk 147,000; from the 18-katha plot alone he has sold Tk 265,000 of brinjal and expects Tk 700,000-800,000 from all three plots. Every five to seven days 25-30 maunds are picked, and workers grade them by size and bag them. Wholesalers come by truck from Dhaka and Madaripur to buy at the field; while the local wholesale price is Tk 50 a kg, his brinjal sells at Tk 65-70. Many farmers visit the field and take his advice; he plans to grow brinjal on two bigha next season.
