About
Nakshikantha is the business of Runa Begum (37), a woman entrepreneur from the Shahi Eidgah Hazaribagh area of Sylhet city. Having learned sewing from her mother as a child, she started small in 2008, stitching kanthas to ease her family's hardship. At first she sold nakshi kanthas wholesale to a shop in Chouhatta, then began supplying shops in Laldighirpar, Bandarbazar, Zindabazar and other areas. She now supplies several thousand handmade nakshi kanthas and bedsheets a month, at wholesale rates, to shops and shopping centres in the city. Adults' and children's nakshi kanthas, embroidered bedsheets and girls' dresses are made to her own designs. The stitching is done by many women; the work provides employment for about 400 women.
