About
About 10-12 years ago, Nazrul Islam Nuru of the Potol Bazar area on the Jamuna bank in Kalihati Upazila, Tangail, together with Abdul Hai, Solaiman and Majed, began bringing small amounts of broom grass (ulufool) from Khagrachhari, having local workers bind it, and selling the brooms in Dhaka through hawkers. The business proved profitable and grew, and about 50 small workshops have now sprung up in the area. Men bind the grass and jute sticks with wire into bundles, and women finish them with tape or PVC pipe handles for market; workers earn Tk 400-500 a day. Nuru says bringing the grass from the Chittagong Hill Tracts has become costly and troublesome, so he has started growing broom grass on 30 decimals at his home.
