About
Samir Chandra, a farmer from Choilabunia village in Mirzaganj, Patuakhali, has little land of his own. So he leased 32 decimals of uneven land at the abandoned homestead of local resident Monir Hossain and grew bottle gourd on trellises in the rainy season. Grown with only organic fertiliser and no pesticide or chemical fertiliser, his gourds are in demand locally. Spending about Tk 10,000 on seed, fertiliser and trellis, he grew two crops on the same trellis during the monsoon and has so far sold Tk 40,000 worth, hoping for another Tk 20,000 from what is still on the vines. In front of his house he is trying ginger in 25 sacks, and by the cowshed he makes vermicompost in 4 clay tubs, using it on his field and selling the surplus. He has raised seedlings to grow brinjal, tomato and other vegetables on the same land in winter. He started the venture to pay for his children's education and support the family.
