About
Nurul Islam (60) runs a small tea stall by the road near his home in Andua village, Mirzaganj, Patuakhali. In 2007, while working for a private company in Dhaka, he caught typhoid and lost the use of his body below the waist. Unable to work, he came home and, with help from neighbours, opened this stall. Sitting on his bed, he makes tea for customers on a gas stove within reach and uses a stick to fetch things further away; he eats and sleeps at the stall. When there are no customers he buys twine and iron weights and weaves jhaki (cast) fishing nets; each takes one to two months and earns a profit of Tk 1,000–1,500 when sold. Lack of money keeps the stall's stock small. His earnings and a disability allowance support the family.
