About
On a small island in Kaptai Lake at Mubachhari village, Bandukbhanga union, Rangamati Sadar upazila, Prabin Chakma's four-acre rambutan garden holds more than 500 trees. He first saw rambutan in Thailand and Malaysia about 18 years ago; with advice from relatives and agriculture officers he started the garden in 2021 with 500 saplings brought from Chennai, India, at about Tk 3,500 each. The trees fruited within two years; last year he sold Tk 2 lakh of rambutan, and this year about Tk 2 lakh so far, with another Tk 2 lakh expected. Rambutan sells from the garden at Tk 800–1,000 a kg. He also grows malta and jujube and sells grafted rambutan saplings. The owner works in Dhaka; the garden is looked after by caretaker Bikel Chakma. It is a 30-minute boat ride from any ghat in Rangamati town.
