About
In Madhubhanga village of Nazirpur upazila, Pranab Haldar has planted an apple and mixed-fruit orchard on 55 decimals of land in front of his house; the agriculture department says it is the first apple orchard in the district. Pranab, who holds a Diploma in Medical Technology, learned from the Facebook group 'Sobuj Bagan Society' about apple varieties that can fruit in Bangladesh. In December 2018 he collected 50 Harimon 99 seedlings, and in December 2019 he trained at Harimon Sharma's apple orchard in Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh, India, bringing back Anna and Dorsett Golden seedlings. In April 2020 he planted 60 seedlings of the three varieties; they have flowered since December 2021, with fruit picked from May to July. The orchard also has pomegranate, plum (alubokhara) and mango trees, and he keeps bees at home for pollination. He uses only organic manure, no chemical fertiliser, and plans to expand if the apples prove profitable.
